Doctors Without Borders + Somalia

Doctors Without Borders is an international humanitarian organization that works to assist people whose survival is threatened by violence, neglect, or catastrophe. They are a past recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize for their work in bringing quality medical care to people in need regardless of race, religion, or political affiliation.

Doctors Without Borders is fighting malnutrition in 30 countries around the world. The funds we raise will be used to get Plumpy'nut and similar Ready-to-Use-Foods (RUFs) to kids whose lives are threatened by severe acute malnutrition (SAM). SAM is the most dangerous level of malnutrition.

The funds will be used in the regions of the world that Doctors Without Borders needs them most. The regions that required the most nutritional support from in 2009 were: Niger, Ethiopia, Somalia, Burkina Faso, and Sudan.

Malnutrition is a complex problem with unpredictable causes such as earthquakes, tsunamis, dry spells, armed conflicts or political turmoil. For this reason, we try not to "earmark" the money we raise for a particular region so we can give Doctors Without Borders as much flexibility as possible.

However, the draught in Somalia last summer has left over 100,000 malnourished children without sufficient shelter or substantial access to food and water.

Watch this video to see how a three year old boy with severe acute malnutrition, the most dangerous kind, was treated with Ready-to-Use Food (like Plumpy'nut).
