Plumpy'Nut + RUFs

Plumpy’nut®, a recently developed “Ready-to-Use-Food,” (RUF) has revolutionized the way severe acute malnutrition is treated. In the past, milk-based nutritional supplements had only a 25-40% recovery rate. When recently used in Niger, children given Plumpy'nut® had between a 81% to 95% recovery rate.
Inspired by Nutella Spread, Plumpy’nut® and similar RUFs are a 500 kcal mixture of peanut butter, vitamins, minerals, powdered millk, sugar, and vegetable oil. Administered 2-3 times daily, sweet tasting Plumpy’nut® can reverse extreme malnutrition and famine in half the time of past products.
The soft paste is simple to use, as mothers can pick it up from feeding centers and give it to their kids. It doesn’t require refrigeration, water or cooking. Combined with a two year shelf life, Plumpy'nut® and similar RUFs give doctors in the field far more flexibility in treating cases of severe malnutrition.
A three week supply of Plumpy'nut is enough to save a malnourished kid's life and costs less than $100 to distribute with medical attention.
One hundred percent of any donation helps our affiliate organization, Doctors Without Borders, save malnourished children.
In 2008, Doctors Without Borders used Plumpy'nut and similar RUFs to treat over 180,000 severely malnourished kids around the world. With more financial support from WILL WORK FOR FOOD, Doctors Without Borders will be able to save even more kids.
If we can get Plumpy'nut into the hands of the children who need it, we can save their lives.
